The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed 16 cases of cryptosporidium and around 70 reported cases of diarrhoea and vomiting in the Brixham area.

Cryptosporidiosis is predominantly a waterborne disease and infections can be caused by drinking contaminated water or swallowing contaminated water in swimming pools or streams.

Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach pains, dehydration, weight loss and fever, which can last for two to three weeks.

Patients only need to contact their GP if symptoms are severe, prolonged or they have a weakened immune system due to other medical problems.
